The State Children's Health Insurance Program reauthorization bill passed the House on Tuesday, Sept. 24 by a solid margin. Calls made from people affected all over the US made a big difference in increasing the margin over the passage of an earlier version in August. Idaho's congressional delegation so far is silent on President Bush's renewed threat to veto any measure to expand the highly successful State Children's Health Insurance Program. Ten days to go before the 10-year program expires. All four of them voted against early versions in August. Now a more modest bill has been worked out. In an amazing show of political loyalty over the basic needs of our service women and men and their families, 44 members of the US Senate voted against the Webb Amendment yesterday, effectively killing it. The amendment would have ensured that before a soldier is deployed back to Iraq after serving a tour of duty, she or he must be allowed to have a minimum amount of time at home. No one in the national media will remember how shaken Gonzales and his crew were when they left Boise that day. I've had the pleasure of talking with lots of people at the Western Idaho Fair this week about what the war and occupation of Iraq is costing us. We've had some great volunteers help out. People see the jars of colored noodles and the sign with $450,000,000,000 (That's nearly 1/2 $ Trillion) so they come up to take our informal survey about how they would prioritize use of public money. I was in Coeur d'Alene on Friday and helped a group of local folks release a report exposing how much the occupation of Iraq is costing us. I accompanied them to Senator Larry Craig's office. We talked with Sen. Craig's aide about one critical area that needs investment and has been neglected during the Iraq occupation: health insurance for poor kids in the US. On Aug. 2nd, Craig voted against continuing the State Children's Health Insurance program. His aide said he voted against it because the bill included adults. Fourteen state legislators are meeting in Boise for three days to talk about how Idaho raises revenue (taxes) to pay for investments in things like schools and health care. If you are in Boise, it is worth stopping by to hear the discussions and to button-hole them when they are on break. Some are honest that many special interest tax deals actually encourage job loss and hurt communities. Others seem nervous about upsetting the powerful corporations that fund their campaigns.
