Welcome to our page of blogs. We are currently training community leaders from around the state to blog at this site too. The vast distances we face in this state can partly be bridged by this shared conversation.

Our goal is to encourage informal, positive discussion that spurs people to connect with each other and to take united action to promote democracy, justice, equality and freedom. Idahoans have played an important role in the progressive movement in the US and we will continue to do so. Because Idaho is overlooked and dismissed by national pundits, the work of our local leaders is more resilient, creative and authentic. Join us!

Idaho is fortunate to have Dan Millenson, National Advocacy Director for the Sudan Divestment Task Force in Boise this week to help us understand how we can include investment activism in our work, with a special focus on the most offensive of corporate investments: those supporting genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Despite sanctions and threats from the international community, the Sudanese government continues to commit atrocities against the people of Darfur. At least 400,000 people have been brutally killed and another 2.5 million more are refugees. 90% of Darfur’s villages have been destroyed. Our government and major corporations are moving too slowly so activists and organizations all over the US have launched a Sudan divestment campaign. So far, 18 states have passed laws mandating divestment (with another 19 under considering it), 54 universities have divested (with another 47 pending). Cities, public, private, and religious institutions -- along with many, many individual investors -- are demanding their investments do not include companies with strategic revenues flowing to the Sudanese government.

In Idaho, those of us with funds in our state employee retirement program (PERSI) have demanded divestment as well. The legislature balked, but the pressure is building to do a full court press next session. The skills we gain on this divestment campaign, gives puts us in a stronger position on future campaigns.

If you cannot make it to the lunch workshop on Wednesday, plan to meet Dan Millenson on
Thursday, July 26, 2007, 5:30 PM
at the Banner Bank Building, Boise
(950 W. Bannock St., 2nd Floor)
